Semi-Anechoic Chamber: A Practical Acoustic Testing Environment for NVH and Sound Measurement

When carrying out acoustic measurement and NVH development for industrial products, background noise and unwanted sound reflection within the test area may interfere significantly with collected signals. Continuous operational noise from surrounding machinery and irregular sound reflections on walls and floors in ordinary workshops or standard laboratories often cannot meet the required acoustic conditions for noise evaluation and sound source localisation. These interfering signals can overlay the target sound emitted by test samples, affecting engineers’ judgement on noise origins and acoustic characteristics. A semi-anechoic chamber is a widely adopted acoustic test facility. Its floor retains a hard reflective surface while the other five inner surfaces are fitted with high-performance sound-absorbing structures to approximate free-field conditions. It strikes a good balance between acoustic performance and construction investment, suitable for a broad range of routine acoustic tests and R&D evaluation across different industries, and is a popular choice when enterprises plan their in-house acoustic labs.

Home appliance manufacturers use semi-anechoic chambers to measure noise from compressors, fan assemblies, air-conditioning units and fresh-air systems. They track acoustic performance changes across different product iterations, compare noise performance among structural alternatives, and collect data to guide air duct adjustment and vibration reduction design. Automotive component suppliers run tests on drive motors, vehicle blowers, in-car water pumps and electronic control units under varied working conditions, capturing acoustic signals to support component optimisation and vehicle-level NVH tuning. Manufacturers of electro-acoustic products such as speakers and microphones also conduct preliminary performance evaluation inside this space, assisting tuning of frequency response and distortion indicators. It is also a preferred test space for small fans, pumps, gear units, miniature motors, as well as research projects and type-testing programmes from universities and independent testing laboratories.

We can customise the layout of semi-anechoic chambers according to site constraints including ceiling height, floor load, ambient surrounding noise, together with relevant local and international acoustic standards. Our scope covers design, construction, vibration isolation integration and post-completion acoustic verification. The finished space works well with customers’ existing data acquisition and analysis instruments to form a complete testing setup, supporting specimens of varying sizes and diverse test workflows. Our services include on-site survey, acoustic performance simulation, absorber selection, floating foundation design, sound insulation enclosure construction and silencer installation for ventilation ducts, as well as multi-point acoustic validation and free-field calibration after completion. The whole workflow aligns with the practical habits of acoustic engineers, minimising disturbances introduced by the surrounding environment. It helps R&D and testing teams acquire consistent and repeatable measurement data to support noise reduction improvement, sample comparison and type testing, accompanying clients through acoustic tests from early product research to compliance inspection.
